Newry & Mourne will not be used as a radioactive dumping ground.

The very fact that the British government’s radioactive waste management group are considering Co. Down and Co. Armagh as possible dumping sites is completely unacceptable: we need clarity and honest answers from Newry, Mourne & Down District Council.

There have never been any nuclear power plants on the island of Ireland and that is exactly how it should remain.

These are immensely challenging times for our community: Brexit looms, uncertainty over borders, trade is challenged and people’s everyday lives are on the line. At a time when we need decisive and proactive leadership we are faced with silence and closed doors.

At a time when we need answers from MLA’s, Civil Servants are taking decisions we know little about. Locally elected representatives on Council have a pivotal role to play and I intend to speak up for the issues that really matter.

We absolutely will not allow the dumping of chemical and radioactive materials on our doorstep through the back door of a rudderless Stormont. We live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and we intend to keep it that way.

If the government think that the people of Newry and Mourne will stand for something that could bring such dire consequences for the population and environment, then they have underestimated the people of this area.

“We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children-and the children of this area deserve better than this.”
