Road Resurfacing In Warrenpoint

On A More Positive Note…

You know the saying: “If you are going to do a job, do it well!” What a difference it made driving to work over the newly resurfaced Shore Road in Warrenpoint this morning!

After years of under-investment, and in particular, over recent months, motorists have had to endure hazardous journeys swerving to avoid potholes and serious damage to their cars. As the only main route between the Mournes and our local hospital, Daisy Hill, in Newry, this road is the main route on which our emergency services have had to travel, repeatedly, every day. At times, it resembled more of a lunar landscape than a main arterial road.

Carried out by Gibson Bros. Ltd. and completed two days ahead of schedule, the work commenced with some localised footway and kerb repair. The old – potholed – carriageway was scarified off by approx. 80mm and where there were defects, the area was reduced to a deeper depth to add strength to the existing road base. The carriageway was then regulated to provide a smooth base to lay Hot Rolled Asphalt wearing course.

In total, approximately 4700m2 of carriageway at the gateway to the Mountains of Mourne & Carlingford Lough was repaired, finally bringing months of delays for motorists to an end.

Such a project illustrates the difference that proper investment in our existing infrastructure can bring and I would sincerely like to thank the workers on the ground from Gibson Bros. Ltd. who worked so hard throughout to deliver a road that the people of this area deserve, at last.
